Trieste is a small port region along the Adriatic Coast. It is a frequent stopping point for people who want to experience this far east part of Italy before going to the pristine coastline of Croatia. It is an area that still has much of the Slovenian cultural influence but was passed back and forth during much of the construction and reconstruction of this area during the 20th Century and two world wars.
The Alto Adige also maintains much of the influence of its predecessor, the Austro-Hungarian Empire. But this is a region for the outdoorsman. If you like to hike, ski or lodge on the edge of the Alps, this is the place to come.
